The province is announcing changes to birth certificates ordered by the Manitoba Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

Finance Minister Scott Fielding says that the change is an effort to be more inclusive towards Manitobans. The new birth certificates will have three options for gender: Male (M), Female (F), and Other (X).

rom the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, the Vital Statistics Agency is implementing policy changes to be more inclusive to Manitobans,” Fielding says.

The Province of Manitoba is obligated to fulfill this request.

The MHRC demanded the changes be in place by May 2, 2020. Vital Statistics Agency is now updated with the changes.

In addition to the birth certificate changes, the province says it is taking additional steps by introducing a new piece of legislation. This would remove the requirement to display sex on birth and death certificates.

This bill has not passed yet, with Fielding saying that the official opposition is refusing the bill's ability to go for a second reading.
