Extreme heat and high humidity have led to the cancellation of the Manitoba Marathon.

Thousands of runners laced up their shoes and crossed the start line at 7 a.m. at Investors Group Field.

Just over an hour into the run, a decision was made to call off the race.

Organizers said in a statement online, that due to extreme heat and circumstances out of their control, the 44th annual Manitoba Marathon is officially cancelled.

It says in consultation with the Manitoba Marathon medical team and their executive director, that the decision was made to ensure the safety of runners and volunteers.

Participants who were unable to complete the course before the race was called off will be moved to the virtual platform and will be able to finish their race at their own pace.
