Police believe many people may have witnessed a Thursday morning homicide that occurred inside of a busy transit bus shelter.

On Thursday morning at 7:15 a.m. in the 400 block of River avenue at a northeast side River/Osborne bus shelter, a 41-year-old man was killed during an altercation inside.

"This is a very frequented area, investigators are hoping someone in the shelter or the nearby area will provide information on the events leading up to this," Winnipeg Police Service Public Information Officer Constable Dani McKinnon says in an email.

Police say the victim and 38-year-old suspect were known to frequent the area. Both are from Winnipeg. The suspect is now facing a manslaughter charge and was detained in custody.

"It has been determined that during this assault, other people were occupying the bus shelter and may have valuable information to assist investigators," the WPS says in a Monday statement. "This area was heavily populated by pedestrians and required an expansive area to be held and processed by the Forensic Services Unit, which assisted in the investigation."

The Homicide Unit, who is leading the investigation, is asking those people to come forward. Witnesses, or anyone with information, are being asked to call them at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
