Take a book or leave a book. Little Free Library is popping up all over Winnipeg and becoming a great way to engage with neighbours.

Over 60 mini libraries with Little Free Library are scattered throughout Winnipeg. According to their site, 73% of people say they have met more neighbours because of it. That's what the owner of the latest mini library is hoping for.

"We want to get to know our neighbours better, have an opportunity to visit with them and talk to them," said Joyce Kroeker, who just put up her own Little Free Library with the help of her husband last week. "There have been a few books (taken)."

The concept is simple. Participants build a small birdhouse-like container, then fill it with their own books. Those in the area are invited to take a book that they want to read, and possibly leave a book that they no longer need. It is similar to a library, but no membership is needed, and there is no return date.

"I love books, I love to encourage people to read," Kroeker said. "We live on a very busy street, and I thought that this would be a good way to do it."

Kroeker is excited to see if the library will give her and her husband new opportunities to talk to neighbours, especially in the summer months.
