The founder of a North End ministry is moving into politics. Kyle Mason accepted the NDP nomination for Winnipeg North for October’s federal election at a nomination meeting Saturday afternoon.

Mason founded the North End Family Centre 10 years ago and was the centre's executive director for nine years.

Mason, who grew up in Winnipeg's North End and continues to live there, says that he hopes to be a voice from the community that can speak for the community.

"I'm running because it's a continuation of years of serving my community. I'm not a life long politician, I've been working with people on the street level. I understand the needs and Winnipeg North needs a strong voice that will actually fight for things that really matter to families."

Mason sits on a number of boards and committees for North End community groups still. That includes helping bring Canada's second Healing Forest to the city.

"I’m deeply honoured to be your candidate in Winnipeg North," Mason said in an online post after the meeting.

"I will continue to work hard to make sure we have a strong voice fighting for our most pressing needs."

Winnipeg North is currently held by Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux. Lamoureux has held the seat since winning a by-election in 2010 after long-time MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis resigned that year to run for mayor of Winnipeg.
