RCMP Manitoba says a man who went missing on a remote island has been found, believed to have died from exposure.

Twenty-seven-year-old Walter Thomas went snowmobiling alone overnight on Monday on Thompson Island on Lake Winnipegosis and never returned to his cabin.

On Wednesday afternoon, searchers on the island found his snowmoble damaged, 18 kilometres north of Sapotaweyak Cree Nation. RCMP say a short time later, searchers found his body not far from the snowmobile.

"My heart goes out to the Thomas family that were here waiting as we arrived this evening, it’s hard not knowing and not the outcome any of us had expected," Augustus Chartrand, Sapotaweyak Cree Nation council member writes on Facebook. He was part of the search for Thomas.

RCMP is thanking the community members and volunteers from outside the community for their help.
