Team Manitoba is coming home successful from the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) in Vancouver, British Columbia.

On May 24, Manitoba contestants travelled to B.C to participate in the national skills competition that is set up by Skills Compétence Canada (SCC) and returned on Sunday.

There were 27 post-secondary (PS) competitors and 16 of them brought home medals, plus 21 secondary (S) competitors with 11 medals.

Dana McCoy, a 3D artist, is proud of herself and what she accomplished but wishes she knew what she did well on.

"For me, I like to hear what specifically I did good on, but you don't really get that. Which kind of sucks for me cause I'm a very, like, I need you to tell me what I did good on just to feel that validation but the medal also helps with that I guess," says McCoy, who placed first in her category.

Ryan Ross, a CNC machinist, is content with where he placed considering he had one month of practicing before the competition.

"I don't compete very often in a competition of that scale with many other competitors at that level, so to place third I am quite happy with it," says Ross.

Both McCoy and Ross plan on competing in next year's competitions in hopes of achieving a higher placement and gaining more experience.

The World Skills Competition (WSC) was set to be in Shangai, China, but due to the current lockdown status in the country, the event has been cancelled. Originally scheduled for October 12-17, 2022, the WSC is called off for the second year in a row due to the pandemic.

Manitoba did not have any participants who competed to represent Canada on the global level for the WSC.

WorldSkills Members and Global Partners are currently discussing alternative opportunities for the competitors.
