A Winnipeg man is facing serious charges after a break-and-enter turned into a car chase on Highway 1 near Portage la Prairie and ended in gun shots.

In a media release, the Manitoba RCMP says that their Portage la Prairie division was dispatched to a break-and-enter report at a business in the city in the early morning hours of June 15.

The RCMP encountered the suspect vehicle on Highway 1 and attempted to stop the vehicle. In this attempt, the suspect vehicle rammed into the police vehicle repeatedly and attempted to run it off the road. This caused the police vehicle to be caught in between the suspect vehicle and the trailer that it was pulling.

The officer exited the vehicle and the suspect vehicle swerved towards them and then fled the scene. The officer received minimal physical injuries during the incident.

Closely following these events, other officers from the Portage RCMP apprehended the suspect, a 27-year-old male from Winnipeg, and he was charged with several offences including Attempted Murder of Police.

The officer had fired gunshots during the events and the suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and remains hospitalized.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified.
