A Winnipeg icon has flipped over its open sign for the last time.

In 1958, Wally Guberman opened the very first Original Pancake House on 1049 Pembina HIghway. It was a success, leading to the eventual opening of three other locations, including at The Forks Market with Guberman's brother, Monty.

On Friday, the restaurant announced its Pembina Highway location is closing.

"The Original Pancake House has enjoyed being part of the Fort Garry community and we are excited for the new amenities coming to the neighbourhood," they say in a statement.

They are encouraging patrons to visit their other locations.

"You may even recognize one of your favourite servers from Pembina! We look forward to providing the same great experience at these three locations while exploring new opportunities for growth."

After announcing the closure, past patrons quickly commented, sharing memories and a love of the iconic sign.
