A pastor is dead and three others, including the suspect, have been injured following a shooting at a church in Texas.

The incident took place Sunday morning when a pastor discovered a suspect wanted by police hiding in the church bathroom. The Associated Press reports that the suspect had been involved in a police pursuit Saturday evening and hid from police in the Starrville Methodist Church, northeast of Tyler, Texas.

Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said at a news conference that the pastor, whose name has yet to be released, drew a gun on the suspect. A struggle for the weapon ensued and the suspect began shooting with it, killing the pastor and injuring another. Another bystander was injured in a fall, and the suspect also had gunshot wounds to his hand. Smith couldn't say when the suspect suffered his gunshot wounds.

Smith says the pastor, his wife, and two other people were in the church at the time. There was no service taking place at the time of the incident.

“This is not a church-related, religion-related offence,” says Smith, pointing out that the suspect appears to have hidden in the church simply out of convenience.

The church has not made a statement at this time.
