The number of patients who have left the emergency room at Winnipeg's largest hospital without being seen has about tripled in the last few years.

A recent report from Shared Health says last year more than one in four patients walked out of Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre without being cared for in 2022.

That compares to about nine per cent in 2018 and 20.5 per cent in 2021.

Other emergency rooms and urgent care rooms in hospitals around Winnipeg have seen that number grow last year to roughly 13 per cent of patients not being seen by a doctor.

A spokesperson for Doctors Manitoba says the shortage of healthcare workers is a major problem and the situation in the province is among the worst in Canada.
