Paul Maurice is stepping down as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets according to the club.

The Jets say in a release that the decision was Maurice's and the team has accepted his resignation. The move is effective immediately.

Assistant Coach Dave Lowry will take over head coaching duties on an interim basis.

Speaking to the media on Friday morning, Maurice says that he knows that it is time for him to step aside. The club has been struggling somewhat and he says he believes the team has not been reaching their full potential.

Maurice was hired by the Jets in January 2014, replacing the fired Claude Noël. He's only the second coach in Jets 2.0 history since the club moved from Atlanta to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season.

He coached 516 regular season games as the bench boss of the Jets, guiding them to a record of 272-160-54, as well as 21 games in the playoffs with a record of 9-12 in the post season.

The Jets have started the 2021-22 season with a record of 13-10-5 and were booed by hometown fans in a 4-2 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday night. They host the Capitals tonight at Canada Life Centre.

Over his 26-year coaching career, split between the Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Jets, Maurice owns a winning record of 762–670–125.

This is a developing story. More to come.
