Local pharmacies can now test some patients for COVID-19.

Rapid antigen and molecular COVID-19 tests will be available at Manitoban pharmacies choosing to participate, starting Monday for people travelling out of Manitoba. This is only available for people travelling outside of Manitoba.

"This change builds testing capacity throughout the province, bringing COVID-19 testing to the neighbourhood level and provides travellers with more choices," Health Minister Audrey Gordon says, standing inside Prairie Health Apothecary, a St. Vital pharmacy.

People will need to show hotel reservations, plane tickets, or other proof of travel to get the test. Documentation will be given to the patients, depending on their needs, for their travels. Gordon says these rapid tests fit the requirement for Manitobans going to the United States.

"Pharmacists look forward to again playing a significant role in helping Manitobans resume normal activities, including travel," Ashley Hart, the president of Pharmacists Manitoba says.

This is a paid service, meaning the Province of Manitoba is not covering the rapid tests. Provincial PCR tests continue to be free.

Tests cost will be determined by individual pharmacies, which Hart says will depend on the test's supplier and other factors.

Pharmacies are responsible for ordering the tests, training staff, and advertising.
