Mounties found more than they bargained for when attempting to recover a stolen SUV.

Overnight Tuesday, the Turtle Mountain RCMP detachment received a report of suspects entering a Rock Lake garage, stealing a white SUV, and fleeing.

While driving to the R.M. of Argyle location, they were alerted to a second robbery of a similar nature in the area. The call told them another garage nearby had been entered by suspects who stole an all-terrain vehicle.

When they arrived with police dogs, they could not locate the suspects.

Later in the evening that Tuesday, a built-in tracking system inside the SUV located the vehicle. Police then followed the tracking, and at 9:10 p.m. they found the vehicle in the R.M. of Victoria on Highway 2.

Attempting to pull the vehicle over, RCMP officers initiated a traffic stop but the SUV sped away.

"The officers did not pursue the vehicle for public safety reasons," RCMP Manitoba says in a statement.

The next night, the stolen vehicle was traced back to the R.M. of Glenboro - South Cypress to a  field off of Highway 5.

"Officers, along with Police Dog Services, attended and located five suspects. While officers were attempting to make an arrest, one of the suspects failed to comply with the officer’s commands and Police Service Dog ‘Genie’ was deployed to assist," RCMP Manitoba says.
