A routine patrol turned into quick-response situation after families were seen fleeing a burning building by the WPS helicopter Friday morning.

At 2:50 a.m. the Winnipeg Police Service's (WPS) AIR1 helicopter was flying over the Centennial area when they noticed a commotion in the 500 block of William Avenue.

While overhead, the crew observed a large fire in a residential home. The home was engulfed in flames with smoke pouring out of it. They also witnessed residents outside of a home alerting others in the area of the large fire.

Police were unable to immediately confirm if there was a baby, but fire crews arrived shortly afterward to provide further aid. At this point, most of the house was on fire.

Authorities taped off the street as crews assessed the fire.
