Elders at Sagkeeng First Nation are distributing moose meat after an animal was killed inside an enclosure.

In early October, a bull moose was killed in the Game Hunting Area (GHA) 26 moose closure in Nopiming Provincial Park. The province says this is illegal.

Conservation officers with the province began investigating and executed a pair of search warrants. While searching, officers found the illegally killed moose.

They also found evidence that is leading to the charging of three Sagkeeng First Nation men and a Powerview-Pine Falls woman for possessing illegally taken wildlife. A man is also facing a charge of killing a moose in a closed area. The four must now pay a $5,000 fine.

Conservation now has given the moose meat to elders in the Sagkeeng First Nation. The elders will be distributing the meat throughout the community.
