The Public Health Agency of Canada says there is a Salmonella outbreak in Western Canada that is making people sick.

The agency says 46 cases of the bacterial infection have been reported in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and B.C., and one case in Ontario linked to travel to Alberta.

While the source of the bacteria has not been identified, people who became sick reported eating fresh produce before their illness.

Anyone can become sick with salmonella, but young children, the elderly, pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

The agency said Friday that people became sick between late September and mid-October, and are between the ages of nine and 89 years old.

There are no food recall warnings associated with the outbreak.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is investigating.
