Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day

1 in 5 women worldwide suffer from postpartum depression or other forms of perinatal mood or anxiety disorders.

While many women experience some mild mood changes, such as baby blues, during or after the birth of the child, 15 to 20% of women experience more significant symptoms of depression, according to Postpartum Support International.

It is also something that every woman, no matter their culture, age, income level or race can develop. Symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders can appear at any point during pregnancy or within the first 12 months after childbirth. Although postpartum depression is the most common issue that is discussed, there are actually several forms of mental illness that women may experience. Some of those include: pregnancy or postpartum OCD, anxiety or depression during pregnancy or postpartum, postpartum post traumatic stress disorder and postpartum psychosis.

Postpartum and other perinatal health disorders not only affect mothers, but the entire family. According to Postpartum Support International, 1 in 10 dads will develop depression during this time.

Although there is no way to prevent these things from happening, there are ways to get help and support. If you know of someone who may be suffering from maternal mental health issues or you yourself are struggling, visit the Postpartum Support International website for a list of places and resources to get help.
