Two are dead after a serious crash Tuesday morning that shut down a busy intersection in East Elmwood.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near the intersection of Nairn Avenue/Regent Avenue West and Panet Road early Tuesday morning and were quick to close the intersection.

Westbound Nairn Avenue is closed at Panet Road and Panet Road is closed in both directions.

An East District Community Support unit came across the collision, which involved a vehicle and two pedestrians, around 12:20 a.m.

The pedestrians suffered significant injuries. Officers began to provide medical treatment on scene upon arrival. Winnipeg Police say that two individuals were transported to hospital in critical condition with serious injuries and have since been pronounced deceased. The process of notifying next of kin has been initiated.

According to WPS, the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and spoke with officers.

The intersection is expected to remain closed for much of the morning commute.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and to find an alternate route as police continue their investigation.

Police are searching for potential witnesses to the crash. Anyone who may have information is asked to call 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
