Siloam Mission's supportive housing facility, The Madison, is in need of a new kitchen by the end of 2018.

The Madison opened in 2013 after extensive renovations. The basement kitchen did not fit the budget at that time and was left in its original, operational state.

"We kept our fingers crossed that we could get every day, every year of extra life out of the kitchen," said Siloam CEO Jim Bell. "It's done its job. It's very old."

Siloam is putting out an emergency call for aid, hoping to raise $150,000 to replace equipment and update the safety systems in the existing kitchen.

"It's a place of community," Bell said about The Madison and its kitchen. "Oftentimes, within community (sic), it starts with a meal."

Bell says the project is mainly a large scale rebuild of the kitchen, which focuses on the equipment and the ventilation system. Even though the project was unexpected and they are also running a large capital project at their homeless shelter, Bell is confident the community will come together.

"Whether it's the water we drink or the air we breathe in Manitoba, people respond," Bell said.

The Madison is a supportive housing facility for former Siloam guests who have transitioned out of homelessness. It also provides housing for indigenous youth who have aged out of the Child and Family Services (CFS) system and are at risk of becoming homeless.
