Some kidnapped Baptist school students released in Nigeria

Over two dozen students kidnapped from their Christian school at the start of July have been freed, but around 100 remain in captivity.

Twenty-eight students were reunited with their families at Bethel Baptist High School in the northern town of Damishi on Sunday. The Associated Press reports that so far 34 have now been released or escaped. A total of 120 students were taken by gunmen on July 5.

The kidnappers have been demanding around $1,500 CAD per student, but Rev. Israel Akanji, president of the Baptist Convention, says the denomination refuses to pay ransoms. However, he added, that they could not stop families from doing so.
