It's not uncommon to find this church filled with a holy sound, as you'll find out when touring Crescent Fort Rouge United Church during Doors Open this weekend.

One of the first things you'll notice when walking into Crescent Fort Rouge is a painting hanging on the wall along the church's entrance.

"That painting is rather unique to us," explained Bill Gillis, a member of the church. "It's hung there since the early 1900's... It's painted by a British artist by the name of Strutt, who was most famous in Australia."

Another of the artist's religion-themed paintings hangs in a Wales cathedral. The painting came to Crescent Fort Rouge around the time of Reverend George Salten.

It also managed to avoid being stolen when the church was broken into 15 years ago, thanks to what would seem

Like many churches, Crescent Fort Rouge features stained glass throughout the building, but their windows are a little bit different than the norm.

"Many churches, as you probably know, of this age, would have glass with figures. Jesus or the disciples or biblical stories," Gillis said. "In all the stained glass in this building, there are no figures at all."

Symbols and geometric designs, he said, are what decorate the stained glass instead, in keeping with the practice of Protestant and Methodist churches at the time, which included no symbolism featuring human beings. There are also no statues and few other symbols around the church.

"In addition to the regular church stuff we do, like worship services and ceremonies, we have a lot of concerts here," Gillis said.

What Crescent Fort Rouge might best be known for is its place in the musical community. Over the years, numerous concerts and musical events have been held at the church. Groups such as Polycoro and Echo Chamber Choir also call the church home.

"They perform here because the acoustics are so good," shared Gillis.

The church hopes to continue opening up to other aspects of the arts community in the near future.

Crescent Fort Rouge United Church is located at 525 Wardlaw Avenue and will be open for Doors Open Winnipeg on Saturday, May 26 from 11:00 a.m. to  4:00 p.m.
