We may be just over a week from the spring equinox, however winter still continues to make its presence felt in the province.

“In the wake of a cold front, we’re getting really strong north-west winds today,” says Environment Canada meteorologist Brad Vrolijk.

Southwestern Manitoba — including the City of Winnipeg — is expecting wind gusts upwards of 80 km/h.

“That combined with some flurries moving through will produce some areas of blowing snow.”

Early Tuesday morning, a blowing snow advisory had been issued for: Brandon - Neepawa - Carberry - Treherne; Dugald - Beausejour - Grand Beach; Killarney - Pilot Mound - Manitou; Melita - Boissevain - Turtle Mountain Provincial Park; Morden - Winkler - Altona - Morris; Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman; Selkirk - Gimli - Stonewall - Woodlands; Steinbach - St. Adolphe - Emerson - Vita - Richer; Virden - Souris; and the City of Winnipeg.

For travellers on the highway expect conditions to change very quickly, says Vrolijk.

“From decent visibilities to really, really poor and then back again.”

Conditions are expected to improve later this afternoon and into the evening hours.
