A dog is dead and a woman was assaulted after a man stabbed someone's pet in its own yard.

On Monday afternoon in Garden Hill First Nation, Island Lake RCMP say a 30-year-old suspect stabbed and killed a dog outside of a nearby residence.

The dog was in its yard at the time of the stabbing.

"This dog was a pet, was in the owner's yard at the time, and it is unknown what led him to stab the dog," Cpl. Julie Courchaine of RCMP Manitoba's Media Relations says.

The pet has since died of its injuries.

"Such a horrifying incident for everyone involved."

They say a woman witnessed the attack and went to confront the man but was then assaulted by the suspect.

The victim did not require medical attention.

At 12:55 p.m., RCMP arrived to see the man had left the area, went searching, and successfully located the suspect.

The 30-year-old male was arrested.

He is now facing Cruelty to Animals, Assault and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose charges. He is set to appear in court on December 16.

RCMP say they are continuing to investigate.
