The Major Crimes Unit took control over a robbery/carjacking situation in Winnipeg's north end.

On March 19, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 1000 block of McPhillips Street for the report of a taxi driver who had been assaulted.

General Patrol Officers from the North District attended and located suspects inside the taxi vehicle, one of which occupied the driver’s seat. Officers arrested both suspects as they attempted to flee in the vehicle and located the 26-year-old male victim nearby, uninjured.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that the suspects were being transported in the vehicle as fares when they became aggressive and belligerent with the victim. The suspects were driven to their requested location, where, fearing for his safety, the victim directed them to exit the vehicle. The suspects exited, pulled out the victim while brandishing a sharp-edged weapon, and re-entered the vehicle as the victim fled to safety.

During the arrest process, one of the suspects physically assaulted both officers and threatened to kill them. Neither officer suffered any injury as a result of the assaults.
