In light of his son's recent passing, the meaning of TobyMac's song "Scars" becomes even more powerful.

After the relase of his album The Elements last year, Toby revealed that Scars was based off watching his son grow into an adult.

“I love ‘Scars.’ It is a different melody for me. It was kind of cool to keep it real low key,” he says.

“It’s the closest song to me on the record. I had a few people in mind when I wrote it, but subconsciously I started focusing on my first-born son. For the first time in my life I found myself sending ships of out the harbour. Up to now our family and home have been the harbour. The people I love the most are going out there facing all the pain, struggle and temptation this crazy world brings. It can be so hard to watch."

"He is 20 years old and he left home and he is doing his own thing now," says Tobymac. "It's also about watching him go through tough times and get cut and bruised."

The message, TobyMac told CBN, can reach even further than this family: "I think people need to know that they're loved and they're not alone. People isolating themselves is what's troubling society, at this point. So, when you tell someone they're not alone, and when you tell someone to lift their head up to where their help comes from, I believe you're speaking to a lot of things that are going on in society."
