Tributes are pouring in for a Manitoba MLA who died in a car crash Thursday afternoon.

Leader of the Manitoba NDP, Wab Kinew, confirmed on Thursday that Thompson MLA Danielle Adams died in the crash. She was 39, with two children and a husband according to the NDP. In a statement, the NDP says the crash occurred on a highway close to Thompson.

"Danielle fought hard for a better life for families, northerners, & kids across Manitoba," Kinew says in a tweet posted Thursday evening.

RCMP Manitoba says she was travelling south in an SUV when she collided with a semi-truck going north on Highway 6. She was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP say road conditions were poor. They believe speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash.

Adams was the NDP's critic for Childcare, Housing, Disability and Poverty Matters, and had served as an MLA since 2019.

"Danielle’s passing is heartbreaking on so many levels—she was a young, caring mother who wore her heart on her sleeve,” Kinew says in a statement released online. “She was a fierce advocate for her constituents in Thompson and always made northern Manitobans a priority. Our movement and our team will miss her deeply."

Kinew says that the party will honour "her life and legacy by continuing to fight hard for the things Danielle stood for.”

Politicians from all parties have been posting tributes and condolences online since the news broke. That includes premier Heather Stefanson who says "My deepest condolences to Danielle Adams’ family, friends, and colleagues. Thompson and all of Manitoba suffer a terrible loss today."

Criminal Collision Investigation Team, a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, and local RCMP are investigating.
