Three men are dead and a fourth has life-threatening injuries after their van collided with a train in western Manitoba on Tuesday morning.

Emergency personnel, including the RCMP and CP Police, were called shortly after 11:30 to the collision just one kilometre east of Strathclair.

RCMP say the van was travelling northbound on Road 126 West when it was struck by a westbound CP train.

Witnesses tell CHVN the van was carrying a crew of highway construction workers from a Russell, Man. construction company, that was preparing to work on the nearby Yellowhead Highway.

The driver of the van, a 27-year-old man from Dauphin was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. STARS Air Ambulance responded to the scene.

The three other occupants of the van, a 45-year-old male from the Sandy Bay First Nation, 25-year-old male from the Waywayseecappo First Nation and a 19-year-old male from Dauphin, were pronounced deceased on scene.

Officers from the Yellowhead Detachment along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to assist CP Police in this investigation.

Strathclair is approximately 225 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
