Winnipeg transit workers are mourning the loss of "a fellow brother" who was struck and killed minutes after finishing his shift.

On Tuesday evening at the intersection of Main Street and Matheson Avenue, a 62-year-old man leaving his work at the Transit North Garage was struck by a vehicle. The Winnipeg Police say at 6:10 p.m. emergency crews arrived but found the victim dead on the street.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene.

"Our sympathies go out to the family and friends left behind in the untimely passing of a good friend and colleague, a fellow operator and A.T.U. Local 1505 member, who tragically lost his life minutes after finishing his shift yesterday evening in front of the Transit North Garage," Romeo Ignacio, President of ATU Local 1505 says in an email.

The victim's coworkers are grieving their loss.

"At this time, we are respecting the privacy of those mourning the loss of a fellow brother."

Police say the 62-year-old victim was headed eastbound, crossing the street when he was struck and killed by a vehicle headed northbound on Main Street.
