The Winnipeg Police Service says that the Bomb Unit was on scene at a River Heights park after receiving a report of a small suspicious package.

On Friday at 11:50 a.m. the Winnipeg Police Service received a report of a suspicious package at Montrose Park in River Heights. Crews, along with the Bomb Unit, arrived at the scene.

After investigating, the WPS determined that the package was safe, and was a prize for a community treasure-hunting activity. The small package a prize meant for those GeoCaching in the park.

"It is important while leaving items for GeoCaching to be mindful of how they appear. Please do not disguise packages to look like they are unsafe or would cause others to be fearful of discovering them," the WPS says in a statement.

Geocaching is a popular activity that invites people to explore areas in their neighbourhoods. Participants search for hidden prizes, and in return, leave one themselves in the same spot.

In Winnipeg, there are at least 2,808 GeoCaching locations.

"Let's keep this activity fun and safe for those participating."
