Nixon and Chasity Katabira operate Love All Ministries Uganda (LAM-Uganda), a Christian non-denominational youth empowerment ministry.

Operating under the umbrella of Winkler-based Sixteen13 Ministry, the Katabiras serve over fifty young people, many coming from broken homes. Their goal is to create a family where hope is restored and skills are attained.

The couple visited Winkler recently to take part in the Turf-4-Bible fundraiser, a joint effort with young people from the Emmaus Bible Church to supply more Bibles for the East African country. Nixon explains the project.

The Connections podcast: real life, real faith

“The young people came together with some of the young people we meet every Friday, the college and career [group]. We came and started tearing some of those plastics from the ground. The arena is going to be paying something but [the money will be] going towards Bibles so that some young people can get Bibles.” He’s describing the process of flipping the Meridian Exhibition Centre’s (MEC) hard surface floor to transform it into a turf surface, a task normally handled by MEC staff.

The couple is hoping the job will fund the purchase of a minimum of 100 Bibles, a precious commodity in the area they serve.

Three people lift large square tiles of hard floor covering the turfMembers of the volunteer group removing a piece of the hard floor surface.

“One of the struggles that we've really found in Uganda is a lack of Bibles,” explains Chasity. “They are very hard to come by. They are there, but someone’s wage is not really enough to [cover] the cost of a Bible. When someone's just trying to feed their family and survive and get the essentials, Bibles are not as easy to be found.”

Chasity says they recognize how their work relies on the global Christian community.

“We're just so incredibly grateful for the opportunity that the town has given us to do this fundraiser. This is really super exciting to see the youth get involved. It was such a fun day working with them! We're so blown away by people's willingness to get in there and do this and make a difference somewhere else in the world.”

The overall target is the purchase of 2,000 Bibles.
