Constable Rob Carver is appealing to the public, asking for video surveillance of a shooting that occurred this afternoon.

A back alley by the intersection of Boyd and Power in the William Whyte neighbourhood is taped off by police.

Carver says the spot is the location of a serious incident and could be closed well into the evening.

Police officers will be spending the next few hours talking to people in the area, searching for more information on the incident.

At 12:40, police responded to a report of an armed man in the back lane between College and Boyd.

After locating the man, Carver says officers shot the suspect.

"Officers were forced to discharge their weapons. The male was struck and was transported to the hospital in unstable condition," Carver says over a Facebook Live video.

The man remains in the hospital.

"I do not have any details on the individual that was shot other than that."

He could not comment on if the suspect was under the influence at the time and does not have an age estimate of the man available.

Carver says he unable to provide information to the public what the man was armed with.

"We do not need to be shot at, so we fired first."

Carver says if a suspect raises a weapon in their direction, officers need to be able to stop the threat.

The constable says that this shooting is unconnected to a crash involving a police cruiser in the same area.

Carver says there might be video footage of the incident and is asking those who have information to call them and the Independent Investigation Unit at 204-948-7000.

The Winnipeg Police Service is investigating the initial incident and the IIU is investigating the shooting.

This is a developing story. CHVN will update this page when more information becomes available.
