A first-of-its-kind program is helping travellers feel comfortable while at the airport.

For those wishing to travel but would like assistance, Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) has a new program in store.

WAA says the airport's Passenger Rehearsal Program is the first of its kind, offering flyers the chance to become more comfortable with their expected flight activities and the loud noises and crowds that could come along with it.

“Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is proud to be the first airport in Canada to launch a personalized and ongoing Passenger Rehearsal Program to help meet the needs of our community when travelling,” Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority says. “This is an opportunity for us to demonstrate not only our commitment to service excellence but also to create a more accessible and inclusive airport environment for all.”

The new program will offer those who have a disability or who require additional support for a personalized tour of Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG).

The tours, hosted by an airport guide, will mimic the airport traveller's schedule. The guide and future passenger will run through the traveller's itinerary together close to the travel date.

WAA says that is program is designed for people who would like more time getting around the airport, or have special considerations pertaining to a current condition such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Alzheimer's disease.

“For people who may need extra support or accommodations, the opportunity to have a personalized tour of the airport and a firsthand experience is welcomed news,” Janet Forbes, Executive Director for Inclusion Winnipeg says. "Starting from their arrival at the airport and through all the steps to being in their seat and onto their destination, this experience will help to relieve the anxiety of not knowing what to expect.”

WWA is reminding travellers that beginning June 29, visitors and employees at WAA are asked to wear a face or non-medical mask while in public areas of the airport.

"This added preventative measure helps to ensure the safety of all inside the airport, particularly in high traffic areas, and to further instill traveller confidence each step of the way," WWA says in an announcement.

Travellers can get more information and arrange tours by emailing the airport at info@waa.ca or by calling 204-987-9402.
