Winnipeg's metropolitan area has cracked the 800,000 person mark, making it the seventh largest metro area in Canada.

Statistics Canada released their report on Wednesday for metro areas in Canada. On Canada Day, 2015, the Winnipeg metro area was at 794,729 people and in eighth place.

As of July 1, 2016, the Winnipeg area had a total of 811,874 people, a 2.2% increase. That total jumped them ahead of Quebec City to take over as the seventh largest metropolitan area in Canada.

These population estimates are delineated from the 2011 census.

According to the latest 2016 census data, Winnipeg alone has a population of 705,244.
