High school students from Vincent Massey Collegiate have gathered with community members to take Winnipeg Harvest's Poverty Pledge

It started this past Monday, and the challenge is to see if participants could live off of $3.96 a day, or the same that a person would live off of if they were on welfare. The pledge lasts for five days from March 6-10 , and this includes everything from food to toiletries. The grand total comes to $19.80 for the five days you take this challenge.

Shloke, a student from Vincent Massey, says that there are many challenges participants can face. "Some people like to eat throughout the day, and there's lots of people who like to eat meat," he said. "With this, they cannot afford that."

Shloke adds that he finds it easier to afford, because he is a vegetarian, so it is not a problem as far as cost is concerned. "I am eating cereal every morning, for lunch it's just a simple sandwich along with bananas, and then it's eggs for supper," he listed.

Shloke believes that this challenge is important for a younger generation to have the awareness and exposure to the problems that some people living in poverty face. "I've grown up taking everything for granted, but when you really expose yourself to a situation like this...you take on a different perspective," he said. "This is what I want to try and make better for the future, so I think that this perspective is important for something like this."
