A Winnipeg woman is dead following a skydiving accident over the weekend in Gimli, Man.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that officers from the Gimli detachment were called just before 7:30 on Saturday evening.

Officers received a report that there had been a parachuting incident at the Gimli Industrial Park.

Mounties say that when officers arrived at the scene, a 53-year-old woman from Winnipeg was unresponsive on the ground receiving medical attention from civilians on scene. An RCMP officer immediately began to assist. Within minutes, Emergency Medical Services was on scene and took over care of the female. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

The RCMP says that their initial investigation has determined that the woman was a very experienced skydiver who was wearing all the appropriate safety gear. When she jumped from the plane, her parachute appeared to open at the proper altitude, but she entered into a spin and collided with the ground.

There were no issues with the aircraft, and three other people were in the plane at the time of the jump.

The investigation continues.
