Truck Ride for Special Olympics to circle Perimeter Highway Saturday
Motorists may experience traffic delays on the Perimeter Highway on September 6 as hundreds of truckers get ready to join together to raise money for a worthy cause. The Truck Ride for Special Olympics will start at 10 a.m. at the TC Energy Centre in Iles des Chênes, then travel north on PTH 59 and turn onto the Perimeter Highway, completing one lap counterclockwise around the Perimeter in support for Special Olympics Manitoba athletes. "Special Olympics Manitoba (SOM) is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability through sport," the organization's website says. "SOM offers quality sport training programs and competitions to athletes across Manitoba from the age of two years and up. These unique programs create the opportunity for athletes of all abilities to participate and be a part of a team." "The LETR Truck Ride for Special Olympics Manitoba is a fundraising event where members of the Manitoba trucking community join forces to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Manitoba's programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities. After an engaging community breakfast, drivers return to their rigs, blare their horns, and drive as a group around the Perimeter Highway forming an eye-catching parade of support." New to the Truck Ride for Special Olympics is the inaugural Food Truck Olympics. "During the LETR Truck Ride, attendees can vote on their favourite meals from a wide array of exciting food trucks!" "The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics. LETR engages law enforcement worldwide, championing acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, starting first with their own communities. Head to letr.org for more information." Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid delays.
