'She's my radio baby': Former DJ Christy Fabbri recounts going into labour on the air
Christy Fabbri was a hairdresser before joining the CHVN team, which would lead to a very memorable moment for the entire Fabbri family. Not knowing anything about radio, she was at work doing a CHVN employee's hair when she was encouraged to apply. "I had an acting background. I was doing someone's hair that worked here, and she's like, 'You have an acting background. You should come in and apply,'" Fabbri said. She would go in and apply before meeting with Terry Van Veen. "He called me on the way home and said, 'You're hired. Can you start tomorrow?' And I said, 'Sure.'" Fabbri thought she would have time to learn the ropes, which turned out differently than expected. "He said, 'Okay, you're hosting a show tonight. It's from 6 p.m. to midnight, go have fun.' I did not know what I was doing. I put on a radio voice and then over the years, I learned the ropes." Over the years at CHVN, there were several memorable moments for Fabbri, including soup club and the family atmosphere but nothing compares to when she went into labour while on the air. .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } "I started having contractions. I was sure it was Braxton Hicks. It was my second baby, so I went to my office and sat down and did some deep breathing," Fabbri said. Some co-workers were suggesting that she may want to go and get checked out. "A couple of people came in and said, 'Hey, we think you should probably go home because you look like you're in labour.' And I said, 'I've been down this road before, I'm sure this is Braxton Hicks.'" Fabbri would take her co-worker's advice and go home, but assured them that she would be back the next day. "They said, 'How about you go home?' And I said, 'Okay, but I'll be back tomorrow.' I left my show, and shortly after, I went to the hospital and Grace was born that night. "She was a fun little surprise. She was a couple of weeks early, and she's always been my radio baby." For the last 11 years, Fabbri has been running her voiceover business. She has recorded commercials for companies such as Google, Amazon, and Skechers.
