ONE SURE THING

A new favourite past time to overcome the winter blues can be had at your local greenhouse.

Carla Hrycyna, co-owner and president of St. Mary's Nursery and Garden Centre said, "During the winter it's time to go out and take a look at things. See what's happening at your garden centres. If you're popping in early you can actually start to see a lot of the seed racks starting to fill up and get your best selections. It's nice to be able to visit that."

Hrycyna said that the greenhouses are beautifully warm right now and if you want that tropical experience, visit a garden centre. She said you'll get some beautiful sun rays and some warmth.

Some nurseries are open in the winter and some don't open until March, but Hrycyna said that St. Mary's Nursery and Garden Centre is open year round except Sundays in February.

"It's a beautiful time when you see people walk in the garden centre and they gravitate to the greenhouses and you just see there's a change in them. They go in to feel the warmth of the sunlight and that nice humid air," Hrycyna said.

With the busyness of the holidays behind them, Hrycyna said that the store is in a transition now where you'll see some production starting to happen with their own seedlings.

Hints and tips for the upcoming growing season

Hrycyna said that there are a lot of things we can go through. If you're looking to get some seed geraniums, those can start now. Also, you can start getting the bulbs for Calla Lilies and Begonias if you're wanting to do some planting. She said some people are even starting to plant their herbs indoors now to have an early start to fresh herbs.

Hrycyna observes that there is a change in attitude when you go into the garden centre and it's a relaxing shopping experience. She said that even herself, after 25 years of being there, she gets this euphoric feeling of peacefulness.
