The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place near the University of Manitoba on New Year's Eve.

Just after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, Winnipeg police were called to an apartment in the first 100 block of University Crescent for a report of a man acting erratically.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by a male who was armed with two knives. Winnipeg police chief Danny Smyth says at this point, one of the officers shot the man.

The officers provided medical care until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

The man was transported to hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries.

Two other people who were in the suite at the time were uninjured.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
