An off-duty RCMP officer is recovering after being assaulted outside a Crestview area school earlier this week.

Winnipeg police say two men were creating a disturbance off-property in front of Buchanan Elementary School shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

An off-duty RCMP officer approached the suspect’s vehicle, identified himself, and requested they vacate the area due to their unruly behaviour. The suspects became irate, exited their vehicle, and threatened the officer while physically assaulting him. Several bystanders witnessed the assault and intervened in an attempt to stop the ongoing assault.

General Patrol officers from the West District, assisted by North District General Patrol, School Resource Officers, and Traffic Unit officers, attended the scene where they found the off-duty officer suffering from upper body injuries. He was transported to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Officers arrested two male suspects at the scene.

During the incident, school administration initiated hold and secure protocols, and attending officers subsequently assisted with traffic control to ensure the safe dismissal of students.

Two men, both from Winnipeg, face a long list of charges. Both were released on Undertakings as mandated by the Criminal Code.
