Two men are in police custody and another is recovering in hospital after a violent robbery in Winnipeg this week.

The Winnipeg Police Service says in a release that officers responded to the 500 block of Sherbrook Street after several callers reported a male being assaulted by a weapon in the middle of the afternoon. Many of the callers said the weapon was either a hammer or an axe.

Police found the victim, a man in his 20s, and he was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Two suspects were taken into custody in the 500 block of Maryland Street after a short foot pursuit.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation, and it is believed that the victim had been seriously assaulted with a hatchet-type weapon while being robbed of his bicycle. 

The stolen bicycle was recovered, and a set of brass knuckles were located on one suspect upon his arrest. The victim has since been upgraded to stable condition.

A 32-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of Prohibited Weapon Contrary to Prohibition Order (x3)
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order (x2)

A 25-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order

Both were detained in custody.
