Two Winnipeg Police Service officers are recovering after their police cruiser was struck by another vehicle in a Winnipeg intersection early Saturday morning.

The WPS says in a release that the accident happened around 1:30 a.m., on July 27, 2019. Police say a marked police vehicle was travelling northbound on Pembina Highway when it was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle that was travelling westbound on Dalhousie Drive. The police vehicle was not responding to an emergency.

A preliminary investigation indicates that at the time of the collision, the intersection was controlled by a set of lights that were flashing amber for north/southbound traffic and flashing red for west/eastbound traffic.

Two officers, the occupants of the police vehicle, were transported to the hospital for minor non-life threatening injuries. The occupant of the civilian vehicle declined medical attention.

This is the second crash involving a marked police cruiser in recent weeks. On July 13 a police cruiser responding to a call was involved in an accident that sent six people to hospital.

In another incident on July 15, a police cruiser was rammed by robbery suspects, and another cruiser was stolen.

The stolen police vehicle was eventually recovered by police.
