JUSTICE MINISTER SENDS URGENT LETTER TO SUPREME COURT

This national news article proved to be a concern for many viewers as many Canadians were upset about the matter. It was encouraging to see Manitoba Minister of Justice Kelvin Goertzen hear their pleas and took action, writing a letter that was sent to the Supreme Court in Ottawa to reconsider their recent decision.

"The supreme court also said that there are probably ways that parliament could change the law to not allow this as a defence. There are ways, negligent laws, and different sorts of ways where you could create an offence such that you wouldn't be able to say 'well I was too intoxicated to know what I was doing' and that is what I am asking the federal minister of justice to do and do it quickly."

Bill C-28 received royal assent on June 23, which replaced section 33.1 in the Criminal Code.
