Police have charged a man for 47 fake 911 calls in under two years costing the city several hundred thousand dollars.

Winnipeg Police say their communications centre received 47 calls to 911 between Dec. 2018 and Aug. 2020.

These calls were made to both the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS).

Each call claimed some sort of "fictitious emergency," according to police.

WPS says multiple emergency resources were dispatched and investigations started as a result of these calls. As a result, the City of Winnipeg has lost several hundred thousand dollars.

On Wednesday, police arrested a 25-year-old man who they suspect may have been behind the calls.

The man has been charged with public mischief and indecent communications. He has been detained in custody.
