Two cats are dead, and three people are in hospital after an apartment building fire in the North End Tuesday night.

Just after 11 p.m. on May 28, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to a fire at a three-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue.

Crews arrived to smoke coming from the bus, ding which launched an offensive fire attack with water and foam. The blaze was declared under control at 11:49 p.m.

The building's residents self-evacuated before fire crews arrived. Three people were transported to hospital in unstable condition after being assessed by paramedics.

After searching the building, firefighters rescued one cat, while two others were found deceased.

To help displaced residents find temporary accommodations, the City called the Emergency Social Services team.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
