A 3-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a vehicle that was backing up in a farmyard.

The Manitoba RCMP says in a release that officers from the Pembina Valley RCMP received a report Wednesday evening of an unresponsive toddler at a farm located approximately 11 kilometres southwest of Roland, Manitoba.

Officers say that the initial investigation has determined that boy had wandered away from a group of children when he was struck by a pickup truck that had been backing up at the time of the collision.

The 3-year-old was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Pembina Valley RCMP continues to investigate.

Roland is approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.
