The family of a three-year-old Winnipeg boy who was stabbed multiple times in a Wednesday morning attack says the boy is being taken off life support.

Several media outlets in Winnipeg have reported that the family says a recent MRI shows the boy has severe brain damage. CHVN has not independently verified the information.

The young boy had been in critical condition after being rushed to hospital near death on Wednesday morning.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Daniel Jensen was in an on-again-off-again relationship with the boy's mother.

Police believe they got into an argument that escalated into violence when out at an establishment in the early morning hours Wednesday. The man hit the woman and was kicked out of the establishment by staff. He then ran to the house and stabbed the boy.

The family has asked for prayers as the boy recovers. An aunt of the boy describes him as a "happy little boy" before the incident.

At a vigil outside the Children's Hospital on Wednesday evening Jennifer Spence Clarke spoke on behalf of the family. She says that the community needs to pray for the boy and the family. "We're like the aunties and uncles. We have to keep supporting this family."
