Winnipeg fire crews were kept busy Saturday morning battling a pair of fires in downtown Winnipeg.

The first fire broke out at 4:40 a.m in an apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the complex.

Firefighters rescued four people from the building using ladders.

Three people were take to hospital, one in critical condition and two in stable condition.

18 people were displaced.  The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to help them find temporary living accommodations until they can return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Meanwhile, just after 5 a.m., fire crews were called to a home in the 600 block of Furby Street.

Heavy smoke was pouring out of the home when crews arrived in scene.

Firefighters rescued one person from the building. Two other people safely self-evacuated. Paramedics treated and transported three patients to hospital, one in critical condition and two in stable condition.

The home sustained significant damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
