The parents of a three-month-old who died two years ago after being exposed to drugs have been charged in connection to her death.

On Feb. 2, 2022, officers, along with emergency crews, were called to a home on Westgrove Way in Charleswood for reports of an unresponsive infant.

The child, Layla Mattern Muise, was rushed to hospital but died a few days later.

The Winnipeg Police Service's Child Abuse Unit began investigating the case and, through an autopsy and toxicology reports, determined that Layla's death resulted from exposure to fentanyl and methamphetamine.

On Tuesday, Muise's parents, 39-year-old Christopher Joseph Mattern and 40-year-old Alison Kimberly Muise, were arrested and charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life.

They remain in custody.
